An unexpected lung cancer diagnosis with a delayed EGFR mutation finding
For John, a retired headteacher, the full scope of his diagnosis only became clear months after his initial lung cancer diagnosis.
Recently retired from my role as a headteacher, I enjoy spending time outdoors, playing sports, and savouring good food. My journey with lung cancer began in 2021 with a persistent cough, pain in my shoulder and a very quiet wheeze coming from my chest. As a non-smoker with no obvious risk factors, I wasn’t expecting the diagnosis of Stage 4 lung cancer.
Due to my squamous subtype, the EGFR mutation wasn’t detected until nine months after my initial diagnosis, which complicated my treatment path. Now, I’m focused on making the most of my retirement.
I volunteer at the Nottingham Refugee Forum, and I’m looking forward to using our new polytunnel in the spring. An overseas holiday is also on the horizon, a chance to relax and enjoy new experiences.
