An odd back sensation reveals a lung cancer diagnosis

For Jan, an active retiree, a strange feeling in her back revealed an unexpected Stage 4 lung cancer diagnosis.

At 57 and recently retired, I love the freedom of exploring new places and soaking up nature while walking my dog. My life took a turn in 2022 when I went to my GP after a strange sensation in my upper back persisted for a couple of weeks. I had no pain and, as a never-smoker, I wasn’t expecting anything serious. But after further tests, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 EGFR+ lung cancer.

Since then, I’ve been focusing on making the most of every moment. I’m especially looking forward to a month by the beach, feeling the sand between my toes and watching the waves roll in. Spending time with my family—laughing, sharing joy, and creating new memories—has become more meaningful than ever.

“I love feeling the sand between my toes and watching the waves break over my feet.” Jan
