From persistent symptoms to a lung cancer diagnosis

For Hayley, a persistent cough and fatigue were signs of something more serious.

At 49, I work as a payroll administrator and love spending my time walking the dog, gardening, and travelling when I can. My journey with lung cancer began with a persistent cough, constant fatigue, and shortness of breath. As an ex-smoker, I thought it might be something minor, but my gut told me otherwise.

In 2023, after pushing for further tests, I was diagnosed with Stage 4 ALK+ lung cancer. Reflecting on my experience, I’d encourage others: don’t let your GP fob you off with antibiotics over the phone. If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and push for that X-ray or CT scan—it could save your life.

I’m now focused on making memories, with a trip to Iceland planned for February and hopes of visiting Krakow later in the year.
