Finding hope after a lung cancer diagnosis

For Martin, a fit and active 68-year-old, lung cancer changed everything, but his treatment has brought new hope.

At 68, I’m a fit and active retiree who loves being outdoors, travelling, and spending time with family and friends. Wildlife and landscape photography is my passion, and the thought of losing that due to my illness was devastating. But thanks to my medication, Alectinib, I’m slowly getting back to the life I love.

My diagnosis with Stage 4 ALK+ lung cancer in 2024 was a shock. As a never-smoker, I didn’t expect that my persistent cough, fatigue, and shortness of breath could be symptoms of lung cancer. Since starting treatment, I’m finding my way back—looking forward to getting out with my camera again in the New Forest.

If I could share one piece of advice, it would be this: have faith in your oncology team, and don’t hesitate to ask questions—they encourage it! I also keep a health journal with highs, lows, and questions for my oncologist. There’s hope, even in the toughest moments.

"The breathlessness was relentless, and I had a dry, irritating cough that just wouldn’t go away." Martin
