Lung cancer symptoms dismissed as a trapped nerve

Clair, a non-smoking preschool teacher, was initially told her symptoms were job-related - her diagnosis changed everything.

I’m 46 and work as a preschool teacher, a job I love. I spend my days with young children and cherish making memories with my family. When I began experiencing a persistent cough, fatigue, and pain in my chest and back, my symptoms were dismissed as job-related, or even a trapped nerve, since I was considered too young for lung cancer, especially as a non-smoker.

It wasn’t until 2022 that I finally received the diagnosis of Stage 4 ALK+ lung cancer. Looking back, I wish I’d pushed harder when I was in constant pain. Now, my advice to anyone noticing changes in their health is simple: trust your instincts. If you aren’t happy with what you’re told, go for a second opinion.

Despite everything, I’m planning to celebrate my husband’s 50th next year. We’ll be going away for a few days—a chance to focus on making more memories together.

Help us raise awareness that anyone with lungs can get lung cancer All You Need is Lungs – share Clair’s story!
